Located in Yashima Higashimachi, Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, this is the 84th temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage. It belongs to the Omuro school of the Shingon sect. It is called Nanmenzan Senkoin. It is said to have been founded by Ganjin during the Nara period, and rebuilt by Kukai in 810 (Kōnin 1). It is famous as the site of an ancient battle (the Battle of Yashima) where Taira Munemori and other members of the Taira clan fled to this area in 1185 (Bun'ji 1) with Emperor Antoku, but were defeated in battle. It was greatly restored during the Edo period, and the halls and grounds were repaired and maintained during the Meiji period. The temple currently has a main hall (a national important cultural property), Miei-do Hall, Daishi-do Hall, Nio-mon Gate, and other buildings, and its treasures include a wooden Senjukannon seated statue, a temple bell (a national important cultural property), and many other items related to the Genpei War. The temple grounds are located on Yashimadai, offering a great view of the Bisan Inland Sea, and are well known as a tourist destination.
