A university town in central New Jersey, USA. It is located about halfway between New York and Philadelphia, about 18km northeast of the state capital, Trenton. During the colonial period, it developed as a transit point between the two cities. The College of New Jersey (the predecessor of Princeton University) was at the center of the independence movement, and its president, J. Witherspoon, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The Battle of Princeton took place in 1777, and ended in Nassau Hall. After independence, the Continental Congress was held in the same hall in 1783. Currently, various research institutes are concentrated around Princeton University, forming a university town. Publishing and printing are thriving. It is the place where A. Einstein died. Population 10,000 2016 (1990).
