A general term for a series of preparatory procedures for clarifying the issues in civil litigation. It was established by the new Civil Procedure Code enacted in 1996. There are three types: "preparatory oral argument" (oral argument for clarifying the issues; Articles 164 et seq. of the same Code), "preparatory proceedings" (discussions for clarifying the issues held in a round-table format and open to the parties involved. Documentary evidence can also be examined. This replaces the traditional oral argument and settlement; Articles 168 et seq.), and "preparatory proceedings in writing" (procedures for clarifying the issues held by the parties in remote locations, using documents exchanged or conference calls, without the need for the parties to appear in person; Articles 175 et seq.).

民事訴訟における争点整理のための一連の準備的手続の総称。1996年制定の新民事訴訟法によって整備された。〈準備的口頭弁論〉（争点整理のための口頭弁論。同法164条以下），〈弁論準備手続〉（ラウンド・テーブル方式で，かつ関係者に公開した上で行われる争点整理のための討論。書証の取調べもできる。従来の弁論兼和解に代わるもの。168条以下），〈書面による準備手続〉（遠隔地にいる当事者等のため，書面の交換や会議電話等の利用により，当事者の出頭を要せず行う争点整理手続。175条以下）の３種類がある。
