He was from Taicang Prefecture, Suzhou Prefecture (Taicang County, Jiangsu Province). He was a Jinshi in the 5th year of the Longqing era (1571). He studied under Geng Dingxiang (Tiantai, 1524-96) of the left wing of Wang's school, but he was driven by a sense of crisis that the left wing of Wang's school, including Li Zhi, were destroying human morality, and he harshly criticized them. On the other hand, he also opposed the simple revival of Neo-Confucianism, and debated with Gu Xiancheng and Gao Fanlong of the Donglin Party.
