Swedish astronomer. Professor of astronomy at Lund University from 1897 to 1927. In 1908, he proposed the hierarchical cosmology as a solution to the HWM Olbers paradox. Although the paradox has now been resolved in the relativistic universe, Charlier's hierarchical universe is embodied in a series of galaxies, galaxy clusters, superclusters, and so on. From his research into the spatial distribution of B-type stars in 1916-22, he discovered a stellar group containing the sun, with a diameter of 2,000 light years and a thickness of 700 light years, known as the Local System.

スウェーデンの天文学者。1897‐1927年ルント大学天文学教授。1908年にH.W.M.オルバースのパラドックスの解決案として階層宇宙論を提唱した。今では，パラドックスは相対論的宇宙で解消されたが，シャーリエの階層宇宙は，銀河，銀河団，超銀河団などの系列に具現されている。1916‐22年にはB型星の空間分布の研究から，太陽を含む直径2000光年，厚さ700光年の恒星集団，つまり局部恒星系を発見した。
