1900‐ Lebanese politician and lawyer. In French, he is called Camille Chamoun. He is a Maronite Christian. He was Minister of Finance in 1938, Minister of the Interior from 1943 to 1944, and representative to international organizations such as the United Nations and UNESCO from 1944 to 1946. In 1952, he forced President Houly to resign and became president, adopting pro-Western policies that led to the civil war in 1958. After stepping down as president in September 1958, he founded the pro-Western right-wing National Liberal Party (NLP).
