British Indologist. Born in Bombay and studied in England. After serving as professor at Haileybury College (1844-58), he became professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University in 1860. His Sanskrit-English Dictionary, published in 1872, is still the Sanskrit dictionary most widely used today. His works include the English-Sanskrit Dictionary (1851), a textbook edition of The Story of King Nara (1860), and a translation of Shakuntala (1872).

イギリスのインド学者。ボンベイに生まれイギリスに学ぶ。ヘーリーベリー大学教授(1844‐58)を経て,1860年よりオックスフォード大学のサンスクリットの教授を務める。72年に刊行された《サンスクリット・英語辞典》は現在も最も多く利用されているサンスクリット辞典である。《英語・サンスクリット辞典》(1851),《ナラ王物語》の教科書用校訂(1860),《シャクンタラー》の翻訳(1872)などがある。
