1819‐99 British Indologist. Born in Bombay and studied in England. After serving as professor at Haileybury College (1844-58), he became professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University in 1860. His Sanskrit-English Dictionary, published in 1872, is still the Sanskrit dictionary most widely used today. His works include the English-Sanskrit Dictionary (1851), a textbook edition of The Story of King Nara (1860), and a translation of Shakuntala (1872).
