Yokoe House

Japanese:
Yokoe House
A manor in Kaga County, Echizen Province (later Ishikawa County, Kaga Province). Its relict address is Yokoe-cho, Matto City, Ishikawa Prefecture (present-day Hakusan City). It is thought to have originated as the former Saigū-shida, given to Princess Asahara (Princess Kanmu) during the Enryaku era (782-806), and was donated to Todaiji Temple by her mother Princess Sakuhito (Princess Konin) in 818 after Princess Asahara's death. At the time, the land was over 186 cho of reclaimed land. A draft of the Todaiji Temple's land inventory of various provinces, estimated to have been created in 998, notes that the land has been "already desolate," and Todaiji Temple's management of the manor was already at a standstill by the end of the 10th century. After the Nanboku-chō period, the manor name reappeared as Tenryū-ji territory. In 1374, Sakyō Gon-dayu Ieaki donated the position of land steward of the manor to Tenryū-ji Temple. In 1387, the temple was taxed more than 567 koku of rice and more than 122 kan of public money. During the Sengoku period, disputes arose between the temple and Nyoian, and Tenryu-ji's ownership of the land became mere name, and the name of the manor disappeared in 1538. The remains of a post-hole building were discovered at the site of the Yokoe Manor manor house (a nationally designated historic site) in the northern outskirts of Yokoe-cho, and ink-written earthenware with the name "Miyake" was also excavated.
