...A German-born painter and sculptor active in France who was a representative Dadaist and Surrealist painter. His French name was Jean Arp. Born in Strasbourg, he studied art in his hometown, Weimar, and Paris before beginning to write poetry. In 1909 he went to Switzerland, and in 1915 he married Sophie Taeuber, with whom he experimented with three-dimensional compositions and collages. In 1916 he participated in the founding of Dada in Zurich, and from 1920 he developed the Dada movement in Cologne with Max Ernst and others.
