Remote chemical senses

…A sense that is produced by the chemical action of a substance, such as smell or taste. In vertebrates, this generally includes taste and smell. Among terrestrial animals, invertebrates do not have sensory organs that directly correspond to the taste and olfactory organs of vertebrates, but even in these animals, smell can be defined as a remote chemical sense in which molecules of a stimuli propagate through the air from the source of the stimulus and cause the animal to respond, and taste can be defined as a contact chemical sense that causes the animal to respond when a stimuli comes into direct contact with the animal and is related to feeding. This definition is meaningless in aquatic animals, but in fish and amphibians, due to their homology with terrestrial animals, the sense that arises via the nose can be distinguished as smell, and the sense that arises in the mouth or around the mouth can be distinguished as taste. …
