A group of so-called lowland Christians in the Philippines who live on the Bicol Peninsula, which stretches off the southeastern tip of Luzon, and on Catanduanes Island, and who speak the Bicol language. They had a population of 2.93 million (1975), making up about 7% of the total population. They cultivate rice, corn, coconuts, and Manila hemp (abaca), but are frequently attacked by typhoons and suffer great damage. Legazpi, the capital of Albay Province, is the center of the Bicol people, and with the almost perfectly cone-shaped Mayon Volcano behind it, it is also known as a tourist destination.
