...In the Sino-Soviet dispute after 1960, the party refused to criticize China, and in 1964 Prime Minister Maurer visited China. The party also sought to improve relations with Albania and Yugoslavia, and pursued an independent diplomacy. (5) After 1965 This was the period under the leadership of Nicolae Ceauşescu (1918-1989), who became the party's first secretary after the sudden death of Gheorghiu Dej. At the party conference in July 1965, the party name was changed to the Communist Party of Romania, the position of first secretary was changed to secretary-general, and in August of the same year a new constitution was adopted and the country's name was changed to the Socialist Republic of Romania, Republica Socialistǎ România.
