...Berga's poetic prose, based on the everyday conversational language of Sicily, was culminated in a series of long and short stories, which were defined as "verismo" (realism) by the critic L. Capuana, also from Catania, and gave rise to realist literature throughout Italy, especially in the southern regions, which came to be called regionalist literature. The long and short stories of Federico De Reberto (1861-1926) and L. Pirandello, as well as Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedusa (1896-1957), who later wrote the novel "The Lynx," are also located on the periphery of "verismo." In the first half of the 20th century, Italian literature attempted to modernize rapidly, and so-called modernist movements such as "futurism" and "magical realism" were prominent, and these literary movements were assimilated into Fascism. ...
