Located in central-western Romania, it is the capital of Alba County. It has a population of 73,000 (1994). It is located in the eastern foothills of the Apuseni Mountains in the Western Carpathians, facing the Transylvanian Plateau across the Mures River. It is 232 meters above sea level, with an average annual temperature of 9.5°C and an average annual precipitation of around 600 mm. It is a base for hiking and sightseeing in the Apuseni Mountains, and is also a key transportation hub for north-south traffic, with railways and roads running parallel to the Mures River, which runs roughly north-south. The town originated from the Dacian fortress Apoulom, located 20 km north of the town, about 2,000 years ago, and was the political and economic center of Dacia at the time (Latin name Apulum). ルーマニア中西部にあり,アルバ県の県都。人口7万3000(1994)。西カルパチ山脈中,アプセニ山地の東山麓にあり,ムレシュ川をはさんでトランシルバニア台地と対している。標高232m,年平均気温9.5℃,年降水量600mm前後。アプセニ山地への登山や観光の基地であり,また,ほぼ南北に流れるムレシュ川に並行して鉄道や道路が通じ,南北交通の要地になっている。町の北方20kmにある約2000年前のダキア時代の要塞アポウロンを起源とする町で,当時ダキアの政治・経済の中心地であった(ラテン名アプルムApulum)。
