A town in Nagaoka County in northern Kochi Prefecture. Occupying the mountainous region upstream of the Yoshino River, the main settlement, which is the centre of the Reihoku region, is on the south bank. In addition to rice, the town produces timber, vegetables, tea and flowering trees. There are many protected cypress forests on Mt. Shiraga. The site of Nonaka Kaneyama's mansion is now Uemachi Park. 高知県北部，長岡郡の町。吉野川上流の山地を占め，嶺北地方の中心をなす主集落は南岸にある。米作のほか，木材，野菜，茶，花木を産する。白髪(しらが)山にはヒノキの保護林が多い。野中兼山の屋敷跡は上街(うえまち)公園となっている。西端に早明浦(さめうら)ダムがある。134.22km2。4103人（2010）。
