A collective name for 32 waterfalls on the lower Congo (Zaire) River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in central Africa. The falls fall about 275 meters over a 350 km stretch between the capital Kinshasa and the port city of Matadi near the mouth of the river. In 1877, Stanley successfully passed through the falls by ship. Oceangoing ships can only sail as far as Matadi, and there is a railroad connection between Matadi and Kinshasa. The Inga Dam has been built at Inga Falls, upstream of Matadi. [Kazuo Nakamura] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
