Suenaga Takezaki

A vassal of the late Kamakura period. He was called Gorobei-jo. His main family was Takezaki, Toyofuku-no-sho, Higo Province, and he ruled over Kaito-go. There are two theories about his family: he is a branch of the Aso Daiguji family, and he is a relative of the Kikuchi clan. When the Yuan army attacked Hakata Bay in 1274 (Bun'ei 11), he fought bravely under the command of Shoni Kagesuke and achieved military success. The following year, he went to Kamakura, and was given the position of Jito of Kaito-go as a reward. When the Yuan army attacked Hakata Bay again in 1281 (Kōan 4), he took the head of an enemy general. His exploits are detailed in the "Ekotoba: The Mongol Invasion." Suenaga wrote about his rule of Kaitogo in his "Okibumi" (letter of death) of 1293 (6th year of the Shoo era). His year of death is unknown.

鎌倉後期の御家人(ごけにん)。五郎兵衛尉(じょう)と称す。肥後(ひご)国豊福庄(とよふくのしょう)竹崎を本貫とし、海東(かいとう)郷を領した。阿蘇大宮司(あそだいぐうじ)家の庶流とする説と、菊池氏の同族とする説とがある。1274年（文永11）元(げん)軍が博多(はかた)湾に襲来した際、少弐景資(しょうにかげすけ)の指揮下で奮戦、戦功をあげた。翌年鎌倉に赴き、恩賞として海東郷地頭(じとう)職を得た。1281年（弘安4）元軍がふたたび博多湾に襲来した際にも敵将の首級をあげた。この活躍は『蒙古襲来絵詞(えことば)』に詳述されている。季長は1293年（正応6）の「置文(おきぶみ)」で海東郷の支配について記している。没年は不明。
