A German automobile manufacturer. Daimler-Benz was established in 1926 when Gottlieb Daimler's company and Karl Benz's company merged. During World War II, the factory was heavily damaged because it produced military supplies such as engines for the air force and tanks, but after the war, it resumed production of trucks in 1945 and passenger cars in 1947, and developed as a company in the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). In 1958, the company acquired all shares of Auto Union (sold to Volkswagen in 1965), and expanded its business by acquiring Maybach in 1961 and Porsche Diesel Motors in 1963. In 1989, the company became a holding company and reorganized its automobile business into Mercedes-Benz AG, its aerospace business into Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG, its electrical and electronics business into AEG, and its financial services and other businesses into Benz Interservices AG. In 1997, Daimler absorbed Mercedes-Benz and placed it under its direct control, and also dismantled AEG in an attempt to streamline its management, but in 1998 it merged with Chrysler, an American automaker, to become DaimlerChrysler. However, due to poor performance, in 2007 the Chrysler division was sold to an American investment fund and the merger was dissolved, and the company name was changed to Daimler.

Died: March 6, 1900, Cannstatt, Württemberg. German mechanical engineer and inventor. He received his technical education in Stuttgart, and from 1872 to 1882 worked for the company of Nikolaus Augst Otto, inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine (Otto cycle engine). After leaving the company, he continued his research into internal combustion engines, and in 1883 succeeded in creating a high-speed gasoline engine that was lighter and more efficient than previous engines. In 1885, he fitted this engine to a bicycle, the world's first motorcycle. The following year, in 1886, he completed a four-wheeled gasoline-powered automobile. In 1890, he founded the Daimler Motor Company and began manufacturing Mercedes cars. This later merged with Benz to become Daimler-Benz (since 2007, Daimler).

ドイツの自動車メーカー。 1926年ゴットリープ・ダイムラーの会社とカール・ベンツの会社が合併してダイムラー＝ベンツを設立。第2次世界大戦中は空軍用エンジン，戦車など軍需品を生産したため工場は大被害を受けたが，戦後は 1945年にトラック，1947年に乗用車の生産を再開し，ドイツ連邦共和国 (西ドイツ) の企業として発展した。 1958年アウト・ウニオンの全株式を取得 (1965年フォルクスワーゲンへ売却) ，1961年マイバッハ，1963年ポルシェ・ディーゼル・モーターを買収して事業を拡大した。 1989年に持株会社となり，自動車事業をメルセデス・ベンツ AG，航空宇宙事業をダイムラー・ベンツ・アエロスペース AG，電機電子事業を AEG，金融サービスほかをベンツ・インターサービス AGに再編。 1997年にはメルセデス・ベンツを吸収し直轄下に置いたのをはじめ，AEGを解体するなど経営の効率化をはかったが，1998年アメリカ合衆国の自動車メーカー，クライスラーと合併し，ダイムラー・クライスラーとなった。しかし業績不振のため 2007年，クライスラー部門をアメリカの投資ファンドに売却して合併を解消。社名をダイムラーに変更した。

ドイツの機械技術者で発明家。シュツットガルトで技術教育を受け，1872～82年4サイクル内燃機関 (オットーサイクル機関 ) の発明者ニコラウス・アウクスト・オットーの会社に勤務。退社後，内燃機関の研究を進め，1883年従来のものより軽くて効率の高い，高速ガソリンエンジンの製作に成功。 1885年このエンジンを自転車に装備した。これが世界で初めてのオートバイである。翌 1886年四輪ガソリン自動車を完成。 1890年ダイムラー自動車会社を設立，メルセデスの製造を始めた。のちベンツと合併して，ダイムラー＝ベンツ (2007年よりダイムラー ) となった。
