A mammal of the Bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla, which resembles a cow in appearance but is related to the chamois (illustration). It inhabits the tundra from Canada to Greenland. It has a body length of 1.9-2.3m, a tail length of 0.9-1m, a height of 1.2-1.5m, and a weight of 200-410kg. Both sexes have horns, thick and long body hair, and wide hooves. During mating season, males emit a strong musky odor from their subocular glands, which develop particularly during the mating season, and can sometimes smell it up to 100m away. The body is black-brown, with white in the middle of the back and on the four limbs. They usually live in herds of 10-20, eating grass in moist areas such as valleys and lakesides in the summer, and moving to hilltops and slopes with less snow in the winter, where they mainly feed on shrub leaves.
