An island in northwestern France, on the southern coast of the Brittany Peninsula, about an hour's boat ride from the Quiberon Peninsula. It stretches from northwest to southeast, with a length of about 17 km, a width of 5-10 km, and an area of about 84 km2. The population was 5,500 (1980). It is said that about 15,000 vacationers gather there in the summer. It is surrounded by cliffs, and the island is like a plateau, reaching a maximum height of 63 m. The west coast is exposed to wind and rain, and gorse and wheat can be seen alternating, while the east coast and windshade areas have pastures where trees grow. The inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and fishing, and some are Canadians who settled there when the French colony became British Canada.
