Jack-o-the-wild-Swallowtail

Japanese:
Jack-o-the-wild-Swallowtail

A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Papilionidae of the class Insecta. It is widely distributed from the northern part of Honshu to Yaeyama in the Nansei Islands, but its habitat is often localized, and it is not a butterfly that can be found everywhere. The Japanese name "Jacouageha" comes from the fact that it gives off a strong musky fragrance. Outside of Japan, it is found in the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan. Wing span is 90-110 mm. It has a long tail on its hindwings, and at first glance looks similar to the Onagaageha, but this species has red to yellow hairs on its body. It appears twice a year (May-June, July-August) in the northern part of Honshu and mountainous areas, and the frequency of appearance increases as it moves towards warmer areas. The larvae feed on vines of the family Aristolochiaceae, and the larvae's body is cylindrical and black, with rows of white horizontal stripes on the third and fourth abdominal segments. The pupa has a strange shape, so it is called Okikumushi (Okikumushi, derived from the legend of the ghost of Okiku from Banchō Sarayashiki). It overwinters in the pupa state.
