Arai-juku

...A town in Hamana County, western Shizuoka Prefecture. Population 16,952 (1995). Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Hamana, facing the Enshu Sea to the south. It has flourished as a key transportation point since ancient times, and in the Edo period, a checkpoint was established there, making it an important post town on the Tokaido. Blessed with a mild climate and low, flat land, agriculture and fishing are carried out here. The town produces strawberries and other greenhouse horticulture, as well as rice, and in recent years tourist farms have become popular. On the other hand, eel and seaweed farming on the lake surface and whitebait fishing on the sea surface are on the decline. In recent years, textile and transport machinery factories have been established on reclaimed land in the east, and the population of secondary and tertiary industries is on the rise due to the attraction of the Lake Hamana Boat Racecourse and the development of Niihama Hot Springs. ...

…静岡県西部，浜名郡の町。人口1万6952(1995)。浜名湖南西岸に位置し，南は遠州灘に面する。古くから交通の要地として栄え，江戸時代には関所が置かれ，東海道の重要な宿場町であった。温暖な気候と低平な土地に恵まれ農業，漁業が営まれる。イチゴなどの施設園芸や米などを産し，近年観光農園が盛んになっている。一方湖面でのウナギ，ノリなどの養殖，海面でのシラス漁などは減少傾向にある。近年，東部の埋立地に繊維，輸送機械などの工場が進出し，浜名湖競艇場の誘致や新居浜温泉の開発などにより，第2次･第3次産業人口の増加傾向がみられる。…
