Mount Moiwa

Japanese: 藻岩山 - もいわやま
Mount Moiwa

This mountain is located in Minami-ku, Sapporo. It is 531 meters above sea level and is made of Neogene pyroxene andesite. From the summit, you can see two-thirds of the city, including the Ishikari Plain and mountains such as Mt. Tarumae and Mt. Eniwa. The northeastern slope is covered with cool temperate broadleaf forest and is designated as a national natural monument. The southwestern slope was burned down in a forest fire during the Meiji period, and is now used as a ski resort. A ropeway and tourist roads have been developed. The valleys that carve into the mountain range and the gently sloping eroded surfaces are being developed into residential areas.
