An old town in Naka-gun, in the middle reaches of the Kuji River in northern Ibaraki Prefecture. The main settlement developed as a post station on the road linking Mito and Koriyama since ancient times, and the Suigun Line and National Route 118 pass through it. It is primarily an agricultural town, but also produces timber and washi paper. In October 2004, it merged with Gozenyama Village in Higashiibaraki-gun, and Omiya Town, Miwa Village, and Ogawa Village in Naka-gun to become Hitachi-Omiya City. Area: 84.06 km2. 茨城県北部,久慈(くじ)川中流域の那珂(なか)郡の旧町。主集落は古くから水戸と郡山を結ぶ街道の宿駅として発達,水郡(すいぐん)線,国道118号線が通じる。農業を主とし,木材,和紙も産する。2004年10月東茨城郡御前山村,那珂郡大宮町,美和村,緒川村と合併し市制,常陸大宮市となる。84.06km2。8118人(2003)。
