A lagoon in the northwest of Aomori Prefecture, on the west side of the Tsugaru Peninsula. It has an area of 20.6 square kilometers. It is connected to the Sea of Japan by a waterway about 250 meters wide. The lake is only 3 meters deep at its deepest, and is shallow due to active sedimentation by rivers such as the Iwaki River, Yamada River, Toriya River, Imaizumi River, and Aiuchi River. From the Middle Ages to the early modern period, it prospered as Tosa Minato (later called Jusan Minato), but there is no trace of it today. After World War II, 1,749 hectares were reclaimed as rice paddies and 6,531 hectares were improved with drainage. Shijimi clams are a specialty of the area, and are a source of income for fishermen. In his novel "Tsugaru," Dazai Osamu, a native of Goshogawara City, wrote that the lake has an air of elegance, like water in a shallow pearl oyster, but also a fleeting feeling. It is part of the Tsugaru Quasi-National Park, and swans fly in during the winter. The 234-meter Lake Jusan Bridge spans the lake's mouth. [Hiroshi Yokoyama] [Reference] |The third largest lake in Aomori Prefecture (7km north-south, 5km east-west, 31.4km circumference). It is said that the lake was named Lake Jusan because 13 rivers flow into it. It is a brackish lake where seawater and freshwater mix, and is famous for Yamato Shijimi butterflies. It is part of Tsugaru Quasi-National Park, and many wild birds, including swans, fly in in winter.
