Located at the mouth of Urado Bay, it has been a key point for maritime traffic since ancient times, with the Kochi Plain as its hinterland, as can be seen from the Tosa Diary and the Okusho of the Kaisen Daiho. The shipwreck of the Spanish ship San Felipe in 1596 (Keicho 1) is well known. The conflict between the north and south of Tosa began with the Urado Battle in January 1336 (Engen 1/Kenmu 3). During the Sengoku period, the Motoyama clan built a castle on the peninsula-like hill behind it, and from 1560 (Eiroku 3) it became a subsidiary castle of the Chosokabe clan, and then around 1591 (Tensho 19) it became the main castle, and although it was incomplete, a castle town was formed. When the Chosokabe were removed from their feudal domain in 1600, a rebel army led by Ichiryo Gusoku took refuge in the castle, but they were soon suppressed (Urato Rebellion), and Yamauchi Kazutoyo remained in the castle until the move to Kochi in 1603. *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Battle of Urado" is listed below. …
