A scholar of Japanese literature. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Japanese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. Taught at Himeji High School and Tokyo Prefectural High School, and later became a professor at Hosei University. He attracted attention with Ihara Saikaku (1926), which he added to his graduation thesis. He is known for his flexible and unified view of literary history, which focuses on the tension between the self and the situation from a position close to that of historical sociology, and concretely explores the issues of freedom and independence. His major works include Modern Japanese Writers and Works (1939), Perspectives on Modern Japanese Literature (1941), Studies in Naturalism (1957), and Studies in Japanese Romanticism Literature (1958).
