Sagifue - Sagifue (English spelling) snipe fish

Sagifue - Sagifue (English spelling) snipe fish

A marine fish belonging to the order Sticklebacks of the class Osteichthyes and the family Polytminae. It is found along the Pacific coast south of Iwate Prefecture, in the Sea of Japan from southern Hokkaido to Hyogo Prefecture, in the East China Sea, and in Taiwan. Its body is thin and tough, covered with rough scales. The front half of its head is thin and tubular, with a small mouth at the tip. The first dorsal fin has 4-7 spines, the second of which is particularly strong. The pelvic fin is located on the abdomen and consists of one spine and five soft rays. The upper half of its body is red, and the lower half is silvery white. It grows to a total length of 20 centimeters. It lives in schools near the sandy and muddy bottom at depths of less than 500 meters. It holds its body slightly upside down at an angle and eats zooplankton, crustaceans, and other small animals that live on the seabed. It spawns from January to February. Young fish live in the surface layer of the open ocean. It is caught with bottom trawls, but is not eaten. Due to its unusual body shape and ecology, it is exhibited at aquariums.

The Japanese giant clownfish Macrorhamphosus japonicus , which is similar to this species, has a low body, a short second dorsal fin spine that does not extend beyond the rear end of the base of the second dorsal fin when held down, and the spine has no serrations on the rear edge, so it can be distinguished from the Japanese giant clownfish. However, some researchers consider these two species to be the same. Fossils similar to the Japanese giant clownfish have been known from the Late Cretaceous.
