Ahmad bin Idris

Japanese: アフマド・ブン・イドリース - あふまどぶんいどりーす
Ahmad bin Idris

...An Islamic mystical sect that expanded into North Africa, centering on Libya. Muḥammad bin Ali al-Sanūsī (1791-1859), who was born near Mustaghanim in Algeria and studied in Fes, Tunis, Cairo and other parts of North Africa, was inspired by Ahmad bin Idrīs (?-1837) in Mecca and founded it in 1837. From the 1940s onwards, the sect moved its base to Libya and established a group of zawiyas (monasteries) in oases around the Sahara, mainly in the Jagboub and Kufra oases. It confronted the surrounding powers of France, the Muhammad Ali dynasty, the Ottoman Empire and Britain, and organized a sustained resistance against Italian rule of Libya from 1911 onwards.
