1861‐1933 Chinese politician. Born in Xilin, Guangxi Province, his courtesy name was Yunjie. Son of the Grand Official Cen Yuying. During the Boxer Rebellion, he accompanied Mengchen to Xi'an, where he caught the eye of Empress Dowager Cixi and rose through the ranks, but he was a rival of Yuan Shikai. After the Xinhai Revolution, he was always supported by the anti-Yuan faction because of this relationship, and rose to the position of representative of the literati of the Southwestern military faction and head of the political and academic wing. In 1917, he participated in the Movement to Protect the Law, and the following year he became the Chief Director of the military government. After 1920, he retired to Shanghai.
