…the Greek name of a city on the west bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt that flourished from the late Predynastic to the Early Dynastic periods. Its ancient Egyptian name was Nekhen, and its present name is Kūm al‐Aḥmar. The remains of the temple of Horus, the city's patron god, and the murals in the tomb, as well as the votive offerings made to the temple, including the Palette of King Narmer, are valuable historical materials from the period immediately before the unification of the kingdom. They indicate the important political and religious position that the city held at that time, along with Nekeb on the east bank. …
