Born: February 5, 1808 in Munich Died: September 22, 1885. German painter in Munich. One of the leading painters of the Biedermeier style. He initially studied pharmacy, but in 1833 switched to painting as a self-taught artist. He published sketches in magazines such as "Fliegende Blätter" and "Nürubeger Trichter," and depicted the daily life of ordinary people with a light and elegant brushstroke. His major works include "The Poor Poet" (1839, Neue Pinakothek, Munich) and "Departure" (1864, Schack Gallery, Munich). His style was influenced by the Netherlandish and Barbizon schools, and is characterized by soft light and dark expressions and subtle color effects based on a straightforward observation of nature.
