[Systematics and Classification]
The ancestral lineage of each class of vertebrates is similar to that of a parent and a child, with the child class retaining the main characteristics of the parent class while adding new ones, so most are nested. The oldest vertebrates were the jawless Agnatha order Birkeniiformes (= Anaspida), which flourished from the Late Ordovician to the Devonian. The rest all belong to the Gnathostomata, which acquired jaws and paired fins (or limbs), and are thought to have separated from the Agnatha in the Middle Ordovician. …
