Shingo [village] - Shingo

Japanese: 新郷[村] - しんごう

A village in Sannohe County in southern Aomori Prefecture. Population 3,498 (1995). It is located in the northern Ou Mountains, on the eastern foot of Mt. Herai (1,159m), and occupies the upper reaches of the Gonohe River. 80% of the village area is forest, and dairy farming has been popular in the hills since early times. A dairy cooperative was organized in 1933, and it was the first place in the prefecture to produce dairy products. In recent years, tobacco and Chinese yam have also been produced. The Mayogataira Plateau on the border with Akita Prefecture was designated a recreational forest in 1974, and there is a campsite. [Sato Yuji]

青森県南部，三戸（さんのへ）郡の村。人口3498(1995)。奥羽山脈北部，戸来（へらい）岳(1159m)東麓にあたり，五戸川上流域を占める。村域の80％が山林で，丘陵地では早くから酪農が盛ん。1933年には酪農組合が組織され，県下で最初に酪製品の生産が行われた。近年はタバコやナガイモの生産も行われる。秋田県境の迷ヶ平（まよがたい）高原は74年自然休養林に指定され，キャンプ場がある。【佐藤裕治】
