Sakura is an old town in Shioya County in central Tochigi Prefecture. It occupies flat land on the east bank of the midstream Kinu River. The city center was a post town on the Oshu Kaido road during the Edo period, and the Tohoku Main Line runs through it. Kami-Akutsu in the southwest prospered as the terminus of Kinu River shipping. It is a plentiful rice producing town, and factories have been built there, so production is increasing. In March 2005, it merged with Kiryugawa Town in Shioya County to become a city, named Sakura City. Area 49.99 km2. Population 29,607 (2003).
