In the broad sense, a cooler is a type of heat exchanger that is used specifically to cool the substance being handled. It is often used for gases or liquids, but some are used for solids. If the main purpose is to recover heat, it is rarely called a heat recovery device or economizer. Also, a cooler that is used for condensation is called a condenser, and is often handled differently from general coolers. For types of coolers for fluids, see the "Heat Exchanger" section. For solids, the type of cooler varies depending on the shape of the solid. For example, continuous sheet materials are wound up in the process, while powdered and granular materials are transported on a rotating cylinder or belt conveyor while being exposed to cold water or air.
