The chemical formula is SiO ₂ . It is also known as silica and silicic anhydride. It occurs naturally in various crystalline forms. It can also be synthesized to produce crystalline, amorphous, and vitreous silicon dioxide. There are three crystalline modifications: quartz, trisporinite, and cristobalite. Quartz (which includes rock crystal, agate, chalcedony, flint, etc.) is colorless or colored purple, brown, or other colors due to impurities. There are two modifications of quartz: alpha quartz, which is stable at temperatures below 573°C, and beta quartz, which is stable at temperatures above 573°C.

化学式SiO₂。シリカ，無水ケイ酸などとも呼ばれる。いろいろな結晶状態として天然に産する。また合成により結晶および無定形，ガラス状などの二酸化ケイ素が得られる。結晶状態には石英，リンケイ石，クリストバライトの三つの変態がある。石英(水晶，メノウ，玉髄，フリントなどを含む)は無色または不純物により紫，褐色その他に着色している。石英には，573℃以下で安定な低温型のα石英と，573℃以上で安定な高温型のβ石英の二つの変態がある。
