1839‐1904
Egyptian soldier and poet. His real name was Maḥmūd Sāmī. He served as a soldier in the Russo-Turkish War. In 1881, he participated in the Arabi movement, which aimed to break the impasse of Egyptian colonization. In February of the following year, he formed the Mahmud Cabinet, mainly consisting of Arabi and other members of the Watan Party, to confront foreign military pressure. After the defeat of the Arabi Revolt in September 1882, he was exiled to Sri Lanka (Ceylon). After returning to Egypt in 1899, he became active as a poet and was regarded as a person who innovated modern Arab poetry. His anthology of poems from the Abbasid period, "Barudi Poems," is famous.
