Born: December 8, 1845. [Died] February 13, 1935. British diplomat and sinologist. He served as consul in various parts of China and taught Chinese at Cambridge University. His works include "A Chinese-English dictionary" (1892), the basis for the Wade-Giles orthography of Beijing Chinese characters. His other works include "Record of the Buddhist Kingdoms" (87), "Strange stories from a Chinese studio" (2 volumes, 80), "Gems of Chinese Literature" (84), "Chuang Tzu" (89), "A Chinese Biographical Dictionary" (1901), and "Confucianism and its rivals" (15).
