An agreement signed between Great Britain and Germany in June 1935. It stipulated that Germany's warships would be limited to 35% of Britain's (420,000 tons) and that Germany's submarines would be limited to 45%. Britain, believing it could not prevent Nazi Germany from rearming its navy, concluded this agreement without consulting France or Italy as part of its appeasement policy. As a result, the Stresa Front, in which the leaders of Britain, France, and Italy met in Stresa in April of that year to protest against Germany's declaration of rearmament, essentially collapsed, and Germany was freed from the strict naval armaments restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. The agreement was unilaterally abrogated by Germany in April 1939. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
