Polish director. In 1963, he switched from being a set designer at the People's Theatre in Nowa Huta to being a director, and after working at the Stary Theatre in Krakow, he became the director of the Studio Theatre in Warsaw in 1977. However, he is also a painter, and his talent is fully displayed in his highly suggestive and unique stage sets, which have been exhibited in various countries. His representative works include his own play Replica (both protest and reproduction) (1971), which depicts the horrors of the death camps, and Dante (1974), based on the Divine Comedy.

ポーランドの演出家。1963年ノバフタの〈人民劇場〉の舞台美術家から監督に転じ，クラクフの〈スタルイ劇場〉を経て，77年からワルシャワの〈スタジオ劇場〉を主宰する。しかし画家でもある彼の本領は，きわめて暗示的で追随を許さぬ特異な舞台装置に十全に発揮されるとの定評があり，諸外国でも展示された。死の収容所の悲惨を描く自作の戯曲《レプリカ》(抗議，複製の両義)(1971)，《神曲》に基づく《ダンテ》(1974)はその代表作。
