A colloquial name for fishermen living in Tsuru, in the north of Usuki City, Oita Prefecture. There is a legend that they are the descendants of the Heike Toneri (saburo) who migrated from Noji in Aki Province (now part of Mihara City) in 1605 (Keicho 10). The name "Shaa" is also said to come from the "shaa." Volume 5 of "Sekihiroku" states, "The Shaa-sute people lived in the Bungo area. They sold food and other things. They did not have any ties with the farmers, and did not form any particular ties. They lived by their own plans. (Omitted) Even when selling fish, they called out "shaayo, shaayo."
