Commander - Gunbaisha

Japanese: 軍配者 - ぐんばいしゃ

During the Sengoku period, military strategists would use divination to give instructions on military actions such as the date and time of marching out to battle, the etiquette of victory celebrations, the date and time of castle construction start, and ceremonies, or would perform magical acts. Their presence was evident among the vassals of old Sengoku daimyo, such as Kawada Suruga no Kami of the Satsuma Shimazu clan, Yamamoto Kansuke of the Kai Takeda clan, Ishimune of the Bungo Otomo clan, and Mukai Jozo of the Awa Miyoshi clan. According to the "Nippo Jisho" (Japanese-Portuguese Dictionary), they were sometimes simply called "gunbai." Those known as military lawyers would also fall into this category. [Iwasawa Yoshihiko]

戦国時代に出陣･戦闘開始の日時，戦勝祝賀の作法などの軍事行動や築城開始の日時･儀式などについて，卜筮（ぼくぜい）した結果を指示し，あるいは呪術的行為を行う軍師。薩摩島津氏の川田駿河守，甲斐武田氏の山本勘介，豊後大友氏の石宗，阿波三好氏の向井浄三など旧族戦国大名の家臣にその存在が顕著である。《日葡辞書》によれば単に〈ぐんばい〉と呼ばれる場合もあったらしい。また軍法者と称される者もこの類であろう。【岩沢愿彦】
