The former name of a town (Yasa-cho) in Kato County, southeastern Hyogo Prefecture. It is currently a district occupying the central part of Kato City. It was incorporated as a town in 1912 (Taisho 1). In 1955 (Showa 30), Yasa-cho merged with the villages of Fukuda, Yoneda, Kamifukuda, and Kamogawa. In 2006 (Heisei 18), it merged with the towns of Takino and Tojo to become Kato City. National Routes 175 and 372 and the Chugoku Expressway pass through the area, and the Takinoyashiro Interchange is located there. The Kakogawa River flows along the western edge, and the Yasa Plateau, with its medium and low terraces, is at the northern edge of the Himeji Plain and is a grain-producing region. The eastern part is dominated by Tertiary period hills, and the northeastern part by mountains. The shrine in the central area developed as a temple town for the Shikinaisha Saho Shrine, and the place name is derived from this. It was also a post town on the Tamba Highway, which ran from Kyoto to the western part of Japan, and a nearby market town. The hills of Ureshino were the site of the Hyogo National University of Teacher Education, the Hyogo Prefectural Ureshinodai Lifelong Learning Center, and the Prefectural Education Training Institute, as part of the prefecture's academic city plan. Furthermore, cutting-edge companies in fields such as electronics have set up shop in the Yashiro Science Park (industrial complex). There are many ancient shrines and temples, including Kiyomizu-dera, the 25th temple of the Thirty-three Western Temples, and Choko-ji, which was founded in the 7th century and has many cultural properties in addition to its main hall (a national treasure). The ritual dances of Sumiyoshi Shrine on the Kami-Kamo River are a tradition of medieval dengaku and Noh dance, and are designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan.
