Gamou Katahide

A military commander in the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. He was the eldest son of Gamo Sadahide, lord of Hino Castle in Omi Province (Gamo District, Shiga Prefecture). He was a retainer of the Sengoku daimyo Rokkaku Yoshikata (Shotei), and played an active role as a mediator during the Kannonji Disturbance, in which Yoshikata's son Yoshisuke assassinated a senior vassal. After Oda Nobunaga's advance into Omi in 1568 (Eiroku 11) and the decline of the Rokkaku clan, he sided with Nobunaga, taking part in the attack on Asakura in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture) and other battles. During the Honnoji Incident, he hid Nobunaga's wife and daughter in Hino Castle, and thereafter refused solicitations from Akechi Mitsuhide. He subsequently sided with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and his daughter Gikoin (Sanjodono) became Hideyoshi's concubine. 戦国・安土桃山時代の武将。近江国日野城(滋賀県蒲生郡)城主蒲生定秀の嫡子。戦国大名六角義賢(承禎)の家臣で,義賢の子義弼が重臣を暗殺した観音寺騒動の際には調停役として活躍した。永禄11(1568)年の織田信長の近江進撃と六角家の凋落を境に信長にくみし,越前(福井県)朝倉攻めなどに出陣した。本能寺の変では,信長の妻女を日野城にかくまい,その後も明智光秀からの勧誘を断った。以後は豊臣秀吉にくみし,娘の儀光院(三条殿)は秀吉の側室となった。墓所は会津若松市の恵倫寺。<参考文献>『近江蒲生郡志』3巻
