Wilhelm Hauff

Wilhelm Hauff

German poet and novelist. Born in Stuttgart. He lost his father at an early age and moved to Tübingen, where he attended a seminary and graduated from the University of Tübingen. He worked as a private tutor from 1824, but quit in 1826 to travel abroad and around Germany. In 1827 he became a newspaper editor. He married that year, but fell ill shortly thereafter and died suddenly, ending his life at less than 25 years old. He started out as a poet, but eventually began writing novels, and became popular with his short stories "A Picture of the Emperor" and "Jewish Siss" (both 1827), his full-length novel "Report from the Devil's Notes" (1826-27), and especially his historical novel "Liechtenstein" (1826). His talent as a writer was best displayed in the field of original fairy tales, and his works "The Caravan," "The Elders of Alessandria and Their Slaves," and "The Inn at Spessart," which were published in the "Yearbook of Fairy Tales" for 1826, 1827, and 1828, respectively, are still loved by many readers today.
