Dufay

Japanese:
Dufay
A composer of the Burgundian school from Flanders. He made a great contribution to the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. He trained as a chorister at Cambrai Cathedral in France from 1409, and then went to Italy. He served the Malatesta family, lords of Rimini and Pesaro, for several years, where he learned about Italian polyphony music. After a stint in Bologna, he worked as a choirboy in the Papal Chapel in Rome from 1428 to 1433, where he gained fame. From 1434, he served as the conductor of the court chapel under the Duke of Savoy (House of Savoy), while rejoining the Papal choir and visiting Florence, Bologna, and Ferrara. After 1440, he was active mainly in Cambrai. His compositions include religious pieces such as masses and motets, as well as secular vocal pieces in French and Italian. His style, which combined musical idioms from various regions, laid the foundation for the vocal style that was developed by the Netherlandish school. In particular, in the mass, he made a great contribution by integrating the writing style of the English Dunstable and others with that of the continent to establish the form of the cyclical mass (massa), and also played an important role in establishing the four-part writing style. One of his representative works is the mass "If you are pale", which uses a chanson melody of his own composition. → Ockhem → Related topics Chanson | Binchor
