Mitsuzo Shimoda

Japanese: 下田光造 - しもだみつぞう

1885-1978 A psychiatrist from the Meiji to Showa era.
Born on March 14, 1885. After serving as a professor at Keio University, he became a professor at Kyushu Imperial University in 1925. He was instrumental in the founding of Yonago Medical College, and in 1945 he served as the first principal of the college, and later as president of Yonago Medical University and Tottori University. He researched the pathology of epilepsy and physical treatments for mental illness. He defined the premorbid personality of manic-depressive illness as an obsessive temperament. He passed away on August 25, 1978, at the age of 93. He was from Tottori Prefecture and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University. His publications include "Latest in Psychiatry" (co-authored).

明治18年3月14日生まれ。慶大教授をへて,大正14年九州帝大教授となる。米子医専の創立につくし,昭和20年同校初代校長,後身の米子医大の学長,鳥取大学長をつとめる。てんかんの病理,精神病の身体的療法などを研究。躁鬱(そううつ)病の病前性格を執着気質と定義づけた。昭和53年8月25日死去。93歳。鳥取県出身。東京帝大卒。著作に「最新精神病学」(共著)。
