Zangirimono - Zangirimono

Japanese:
Zangirimono - Zangirimono

A kabuki script term. A sewamono (domestic drama) piece set against the backdrop of the new social conditions and customs of the early Meiji period. It is so named because it features a character with a short haircut, born from the haircut edict of 1871 (Meiji 4), who is a symbol of the enlightened civilization following the Meiji Restoration. The first plays were "Kutsunaoshi Warabe no Oshie" and "Sono Irodori Touki no Koueki," adapted from "Saigokuri-shi-hen," translated by Nakamura Masanao, and performed in theaters in the southern and northern parts of Kyoto, respectively. The first play in Tokyo was "Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun," written by Kawatake Mokuami, which was performed at the Morita-za theater in November of the following year. After that, Mokuami wrote masterpieces such as "Fujibitai Tsukuba no Shigeyama" (Female Shosei), "Frost Night Bells and Crossroad Divination", "Konoma no Hakone Deer Flute", "Island Swallow, Moon White Waves", and "Suitengū Megumi no Fukagawa" (Fudeyuki), mainly for Onoe Kikugoro 5. Mokuami's disciples also wrote some plays, but these Sankirimono only copied the outer form of new customs, and the dramaturgy and direction were no different from the old Sewa Kyogen, so after 1900 (Meiji 33), they were usurped by the newly emerged Shinpa theater and fell into disuse.
