Moulan - Mokuren
One of the ten great disciples of Shakyamuni. Date of birth and death unknown. Also known as Mokuren. Son of a Brahmin monk from Magadha, central India. He became a follower of Shakyamuni along with his close friend Shariputra. He was known as the most powerful of all. Later, a legend was born that says that the origin of Ullambana was when he offered a memorial service for many monks to save his mother who had fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts.

釈迦の十大弟子の一人。生没年不詳。目【けん】連(もくけんれん)とも。中インド,マガダ国のバラモン僧の子。親友の舎利弗(しゃりほつ)とともに釈迦に帰依。神通(じんづう)第一と称された。後世,餓鬼道に堕(お)ちた母親を救うため,衆僧を供養したのが盂蘭盆(うらぼん)の起源とする伝説が生まれた。
